Wide Open

(Wide Angle)

This project is intended to introduce you to wide angle lenses.

You may use any camera that shoots 17mm or less (or equivalent).

You may borrow a camera and 17-40mm L f4 lens from us, or provide your own. Check-out is for one week only and you are fully responsible for the lens and camera, so please take care of it.

The word panoramic comes to mind when most people look at wide angle imagery. "Pan" means many. The way to think of a panoramic image is that it has many points of view (fields of view) put together: To see them all you would have to turn your head.

Wide angle allows you to see more information than you should be able to see with the human eye, without turning your head, through the curvature of the lens and not through multiple images put together or a moving lens. Because of this unique view, there are problems to deal with such as:

lens flare, barrel distortion and close proximity to the subject.

Goal:  Learn to compose utilizing wide angle lenses while dealing with the unique issues specific to short focal lengths.

Wide Angle Notes:

Wide angle (short focal length = wide angle field of view).

Anything below what the human eye sees (50mm on a 35mm format) is considered wide angle.

Project Notes:

You must shoot on 17mm or less.

You cannot shoot landscapes only.

Your images must have a clearly defined subject. This means you will have to get close to your subject and most likely interact with it/them.

Full Frame! You cannot crop during printing.

Your images must show "intimate expanse".

Turn in 2 images (11x14 or larger)
